Document your spending Every week either use this system of entering your actual spends in the spreadsheet or use the Sorted Budget tool or Xero. What ever fits with you, the important thing is to develop a habit and stick to it This worksheet will help you to identify expenses that can be reduced and prevent impulse spending. The process may be time consuming, but it is vital to gaining control of your finances. Once you have calculated what your budget fixed and variable expenses are including allowing funds for a weekly spending allowance you can now work out your operating surplus. Work out what the total household NET income is. Don’t forget to include any boarder income or working for families money etc. Then work this to an annual amount. Minus off your expenses and any rent or mortgage repayment costs and any fixed short term debts you are repaying. If the answer leaves a positive amount then this is your operating surplus. That money should be available to either reduce debt or go towards savings. If the answer is a negative figure then you need some assistance.
