What does retirement mean to you?

It should be a time of your life when you sit back, relax and enjoy the fruits of your years of labour. Perhaps start turning some of your goals into reality or take a trip overseas.

Have you got a strategy or financial plan to make your retirement a reality?

Wealth can do many things but most importantly it can create choices. You may think that retirement is a long way off but you are also a long time in retirement.

Statistics show that, unfortunately, most people do not have a strategy and take no positive action to acquire wealth for retirement. Life expectancy rates are improving as well.

Did you know that the expected number of years of life remaining at age 65 for men is 18 years*? And for women it is 21 years*. [* Statistics NZ, NZ Abridged Life Table 2005-2007]

That’s a lot of additional income you’ll need to plan for during your retirement. Most people have a false sense of security in believing that a few hundred thousand dollars will allow them to enjoy a more than comfortable retirement.

In fact, if you followed the lives of 100 young people today through to 65, the results would look like this:

100 New Zealanders at age 65:

  • 24 are dead
  • 54 are on pension or welfare
  • 16 are still working
  • 5 are financially independent
  • 1 is wealthy and financially secure
So even to fund your daily living you may need more then what you have in Kiwi Saver or Superannuation.

Where do you want to be?

There are two key things to consider that can help you move closer to your retirement goals.
